Why do One Call choose to work with Caravan Guard?

Caravan Guard is one of the UK's leading motorhome insurance specialists. On independent website Review Centre, over 96% of customers have recommended Caravan Guard for service and value, scoring it 4.6 out of 5.

Caravan Guard motorhome insurance is backed by a leading UK insurer, Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance plc (RSA). The policy provides comprehensive cover for a range of motorhome types including campervans, panel van conversions, coachbuilts, A-Classes and American RVs.

What are the key cover features of a Caravan Guard motorhome policy?

Caravan Guard motorhome insurance provides cover for accidental damage, damage to third parties, as well as theft, storm, fire and flood. The policy also comes with motor legal expenses cover to recover uninsured losses such as your excess in the event of an accident. Caravan Guard's policy offers £5,000 of cover for equipment and personal possessions. This covers non fixed items of equipment such as awnings, gas bottles, sat navs, generators, cooking utensils and TVs used in the motorhome as well as items such as clothing taken from the home. Think about whether you need European cover? Caravan Guard’s research shows around 50% of motorhome owners want to travel in Europe and the 50% don’t. If you do plan to travel abroad, Caravan Guard’s policy gives the option to travel around Europe for up to 9 months per annum. If you don't plan to travel abroad, you can choose not to take European cover in exchange for a premium saving.

Are there any other features?

Caravan Guard's policy includes features such UK breakdown assistance and recovery, public liability cover, cover for keys and locks, personal accident cover to offer peace of mind. You can also add emergency accommodation cover to your policy.

Is there anything I can do to reduce my premium?

No claim discounts generally give the biggest savings on motorhome insurance. Caravan Guard offer up to 52% no claim discount. If a person is selling their car to buy a motorhome it is possible to transfer the no claims bonus from the insurance policy for that car to the motorhome policy. That said in a lot of cases motorhomes are bought as additional vehicles meaning there is no ‘no claims bonus’ entitlement to transfer. In these cases Caravan Guard may take into account the driver’s motor insurance claims history, driving convictions and even experience of driving similar sized vehicles or towing a caravan to give an introductory no claims discount that can still give a significant saving.

In return for a small premium increase it is possible for policyholders to protect their no claims bonus if 4 years no claims discount has been earned.

You’ll generally find that insurance providers will offer lower premiums for lower mileage whereas premium loading could apply for high mileage. For instance Caravan Guard offer a discount if you travel less than 5000 miles per annum.

Does improved security reduce premiums?

Having particular safety and security devices fitted to your motorhome can significantly reduce your premium. Caravan Guard offer up to 25% security device discount. The top 25% discount is available if you fit a Caravan Guard approved tracking device. Thatcham Category 1 alarm systems get 19% discount. Manufacturer fitted immobilisers – a feature on most new motorhomes – generate a 15% discount with Caravan Guard. Reversing cameras get a 2.5% saving.

Storing your motorhome securely is another way to reduce costs. A locked garage or driveway that has permanently locked gates or a security drive post will generally make your insurance premium more affordable. Choosing a storage site that has 24-hour access control, perimeter fencing, CCTV, and onsite wardens will not only provide the best protection for the motorhome, but again, could help reduce insurance costs. You can search for the best storage sites near you online at the CaSSOA website.

Is there a threshold in value above which insurers start to insist on better security?

There is, this is because high-value motorhomes are more likely to be targeted by thieves.

On motorhomes insured for over £40,000, Caravan Guard requires a Thatcham Category 1 approved alarm to be fitted as a minimum. Very often your motorhome dealer will fit such systems. (An approved tracking device would also be acceptable at this value.)

An approved tracking device and an immobiliser must be fitted if your motorhome is insured for over £55,000. And lastly, on motorhomes valued at £80,000 or more Caravan Guard insist that a tracking device and CAT 1 alarm are fitted. Caravan Guard will provide details of which tracking devices are 'approved' during your quote.
